My name is Kristi and I have been making soap since 2009. I began soapmaking because I was searching for environmentally conscious DIY Christmas gift ideas. I had just completed my bachelor’s in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation with a minor in Sustainability and through my course of study I had been introduced to many alternative ideas on how to live in a more earth conscious manner. I wanted to inspire my friends and family to make small changes in their life to also become more ecocentric. As a freshwater aquatic invertebrate biologist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission I am constantly aware of water quality issues and the presence of chemical pollutants. Considering my education and work experience when thinking about appropriate gifts for the holiday season I decided bath products would be a fun, useful, and practical idea.
I make cold processed soap, which is simply the mix of oils and butters with sodium hydroxide (lye). All these ingredients are naturally occurring. Commercial soaps have synthetic detergents, hardeners, and lathering agents added to them. These chemicals can be drying and irritating, especially to sensitive skin. They also contribute to water pollution as they are rinsed down the drain and end up in local water bodies.
As a bonus I found that making soap allowed me to produce useful art pieces. I started off only making bath products for friends and close family. My coworkers became interested in my soaps after many of them graciously agreed to being test subjects when I was experimenting with my recipe. I decided to offer my products for sale during the holiday season and it has grown from there. Thank you so much for visiting my shop and taking an interest in what I have to offer. I hope I can help you not only find the great product you are looking for, but also encourage you to make earth conscious purchasing decisions.
